Beijing 198, Chen Handong is the sucessful boss of a brokerage
firm. Among the people who work with him, only Liu Zheng, his faithful
business partner, knows about his taste for young men. When penniless
Lan Yu leaves his native countryside to study architecture in town
he runs into Liu Zheng who advises him to hire himself out to the
owner of a gay club.
Handong, who happens to be in that club on he same evening, won't
hear of it. He takes Lan Yu to his place and introduces him to seemingly
new sexual practices. Exploring the tension between social conventions
and desire for freedom, Lan yu is HongKong's Stanley Kwan's elegant
and sensual new film.
